Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant sold two million tonnes of universal mills rolls

21December2018
Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (ChMK PAO, MOEX: CHMK, part of Mechel Group) has shipped a total of two million tonnes of rolls since its universal rolling mill was launched.

Sections make up for 54% of the total volume of shipped products, while rails account for 46%.

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant’s universal rolling mill was launched in 2013. Since its launch, the mill mastered production of 55 H- and I-beam profiles, four types of U-bars, three specialty rolls and four types of rails.

The majority of the plant’s rails are used by Russian Railways for repairing and making new railroads. Some of the plant’s rails are exported to neighboring states, including Kazakhstan, Belarus, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Latvia, Lithuania and Azerbaijan. The plant’s rails are also used for metro networks in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Omsk, as well as Baikonur and Plesetsk cosmodromes.

The universal rolling mill produces rails up to 100 meters in length, which are used on speed railroads with traffic up to 250 km/h. The plant’s rails are particularly durable and resistant to wear. These high properties are due to an innovative technology of tempering rails in an organic polymer solution, which in Russia is used only by Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. The plant’s long rails are part of the noiseless “velvet road” of the Moscow Central Ring — Moscow Metro’s new belt line.

The beams’ key consumers include construction and wagonbuilding companies, steel structure plants, steelmaking and mining facilities. Rolled sections have high geometrical precision and consistent mechanical characteristics.

To produce rails and sections, the plant uses its own steel, which enables the plant to closely monitor all production stages and guarantee high quality. The mill employs state-of-the-art rolling, tempering, leveling and processing technologies. The mill’s products have been certified as compliant not only with Russian, but European quality standards as well.

“The rolling mill’s project was created as part of the federal import substitution program. Today we market our products domestically and are actively mastering products due for neighboring states and far abroad. We plan to expand our product range and reach the mill’s annual capacity of 1.1 million tonnes of steel products,” Mechel-Steel Management Company OOO’s Chief Executive Officer Andrey Ponomarev commented.
