Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant masters production of new rails

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (ChMK PAO, MOEX: CHMK, part of Mechel Group) became a certified producer of switch point rails. By the end of this month, the plant plans to ship the first 600 tonnes of the new product to Novosibirsk and Murom plants for producing railroad switches for Russian Railways.

The OR65 switch point rails of the NT260 category are used in railroad switch construction. The new product will be sold to switch manufacturers for further processing and assembly.

The plant’s certificate confirms the switch point rails’ compliance with the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union’s railroad infrastructure safety guidelines. The certificate was issued for five years by the Railway Equipment Registry.

During the certification process, Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant’s new product was tested for quality in the plant’s testing facilities and in the Railway Research Institute’s testing center. An acceptance board consisting of Russian Railways officials and representatives of switch producers evaluated the steelmaking, ladling and rail rolling processes, checked the plant’s regulations, equipment integrity, control service and personnel qualifications.

“Switch point rails are asymmetrical, so they are hard to produce. Only two metallurgical plants in Russia have mastered their production. Demand for this product is consistently high. Next year we plan to increase switch point rail sales to Russian Railways as well as export them to neighboring states,” Mechel-Steel Management Company OOO’s Chief Executive Officer Andrey Ponomarev commented.

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant currently produces five types of rails, including those for speed railways with traffic speed of up to 250 km/h. The plant’s rails have high performance properties and are much in demand. Rails are produced using high-quality steel made at the plant and rolled at the universal rolling mill launched in 2013. All of the plant’s rail products have been certified by the federal Railway Equipment Registry.
