Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant Produced Total 1.5 Million Tonnes at Universal Rolling Mill

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (ChMK PAO, part of Mechel Group, MOEX: CHMK) has produced a total of 1.5 million tonnes of rolls at its universal rolling mill since its launch.

The mill produces high-quality structural shapes — beams and rails up to 100 meters in length. Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant’s rails are supplied to Russian Railways. The plant’s rails were also used for Moscow Metro’s tracks and industrial areas of major companies (including Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, Severstal and others), as well as exported to Belarus and Kazakhstan. The beams’ key customers are wagonbuilding facilities, steel structure plants, steelmakers and mining companies.

Since its launch in 2012, the rolling mill mastered production of over 50 profiles of shapes from various steel grades, including four types of rails. The mill’s rails have high performance qualities, including resistance to wear and durability, due to an innovative technology of hardening rails in an organic polymer solution. The mill’s structural shapes have high geometric exactitude of the finished profile and consistent stress-related characteristics. The mill’s products have been certified as compliant not only with Russian standards, but also with European quality norms.

The rolling mill’s load is constantly growing. In 2017 the plant produced a total of 635,000 tonnes of products, which is 23% higher than the previous year. Those include 357,000 tonnes of rails, with 330,000 tonnes sold to Russian Railways, and 278,000 tonnes of beams.

“The production boost at the mill enables us to meet the domestic market’s demand for high-quality structural rolls while efficiently developing our export market. In 2017, rail supplies to our key rail customer, Russian Railways, went up by 22% year-on-year. Beam supplies went up by 31%,” Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant PAO’s Managing Director Anatoly Schetinin commented.
