Southern Kuzbass Noted for Contribution to Environment Program

Southern Kuzbass Coal Company (part of Mechel Group) won expert praise for its participation in the United Nations ecological program.

Results of the UN-sponsored project “Issues of maintaining biodiversity in the policies and programs of Russia’s energy sector” were announced at the final conference held by Russia’s Environment and Natural Resources Ministry and the Kemerovo Region’s natural resources and ecology department. Four coal producers took part in the project which also included 24 research studies.

At the conference, UN experts and local administration officials had high praise for Southern Kuzbass Coal Company’s contribution to the project. Scientists from the Federal Coal and Coal Chemistry Research Center with Russian Academy of Sciences in Kemerovo worked out methods and recommendations for using the integrated disturbed-land suitability index for reclamation, as well as proved experimentally the possibility of using coal mining and washing waste for biological land restoration.

“Results of the project we took part in were included in the collection of innovative solutions for preserving biodiversity in the coal mining sector, as well as the list of the best available technologies. We plan to share our research results with other Mechel Group facilities for practical implementation,” Southern Kuzbass Coal Company PAO’s ecological department chief Igor Chekalov noted.
