Mechel-Coke conducted technical upgrading of its benzene facility

November 23, 2017

Mechel-Coke conducted technical upgrading of its benzene facility in the framework of a cooperation agreement with Russia’s Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources and Chelyabinsk Region. The upgrade created a closed coke gas cooling cycle in the heat-exchange equipment, without coke-oven effluent having contact with the atmosphere, which enabled the plant to completely eliminate a major source of waste emission. This technology is up to the highest global standard in the coke industry.

Russian Railways OAO's President Vladimir Yakunin and Chelyabinsk Region's Governor Boris Dubrovsky toured Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant's universal rolling mill. The mill ensures import substitution of rail products for the Russian market and covers Russian Railways' needs in promising types of rails for developing high-speed railway transit. In June 2015, Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant obtained a certificate of compliance with the Customs Union's Technical Regulations for its rails of up to 100 meters in length, which enables the plant to begin rail supplies to Russian Railways.

Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev launched the mill in an official ceremony at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. The universal rolling mill is Russia’s first complex universal producer of high-quality structural shapes and rails of 12.5 to 100 meters long. The mill’s complex uses state-of-the-art rolling, correction, processing and quality control technologies. The mill’s annual production capacity totals over 1 million tonnes of structural shapes and rails. When at full capacity, the mill will annually supply up to 400,000 tonnes of high wear-resistant and contact endurance rails for high-speed trains, as well as rails for use in low temperatures.
