Moscow Coke and Gas Plant

History

1951

The Moscow Coke and Gas Plant is launched. The plant was built to produce not only coke, but also coke gas to add to natural gas supplied to Muscovites. A village was built to house the plant’s employees, which in 1965 became the town of Vidnoye.

1960s

The plant launches ammonia production providing liquid ammonia and ammonia water for fertilizing, liquid and gas carbonic acid for industrial needs, and an oxygen shop producing liquid and gaseous oxygen and nitrogen, inert gases and others.

1972-1973

One of Russia’s first biochemical sewage treatment units is launched.

1980-1990

The plant begins manufacturing consumer goods such as video- and audiotapes, detergents, ash-and-slad removal blocks and such.

1991-1994

All coke-oven batteries are transposed. Due to environment concerns, ammonia production and the rectification shop are closed.

Early 2000s

The number of coking chambers in the batteries # 1 and 4 is increased. All equipment is constantly upgraded, with new technologies implemented in the recovery shop.

2006

The plant joins Mechel Group.

2007

The plant reaches its all-time record production levels of 1.203 million tonnes of coke a year.

2008

The plant installed a modern patchwork system for coke ovens which led to a reduction of soot and carbon monoxide emissions.

The plant won the regional competition’s special prize in the Best Industrial Enterprise nomination.

2009

A new bridge crane with computer control elements was installed and launched in the coal preparation shop.

New state-of-the-art equipment was installed in the benzene facility of the plant’s by-product recovery shop. This enabled the plant to radically reduce its emissions of benzene hydrocarbons.

Three additional mechanical draft cooling towers were installed, which helped improve primary coke gas cleanup.

2010

The plant set a new annual production record — 1.27 million tonnes of coke.

The plant enlarged its outdoor coal storage.

2011

The by-product recovery workshop was equipped with a new twinned heat exchanger for cooling coke gas.

2012

The plant overhauled several of its buildings and facilities, including the indoor coal storage, the rail depot, the by-product recovery workshop and the maintenance and repair shop.

2016

The plant produced its 65-millionth tonne of coke in time for its 65th anniversary.

The outdoor coal storage was equipped with a dust suppression system.

2017

Dust-collecting units in the coke workshop were revamped.

For the first time, the plant used innovative transport — tank containers — for transporting chemical products.
