What We Do

Izhstal becomes Russia’s first producer of conductor rails for metro

Izhstal PAO (part of Mechel Group, MOEX: IGST) has mastered production of conductor rails used to feed electricity to underground metro cars. Until now, Russia has not produced this type of rails.

This type of rail is a conductor for a sliding contact with the wagon’s collector. Its key feature is its extremely low electric resistivity. The conductor rails must also comply with strict requirements on curvature and geometric precision.

Billets for this type of rails are made of low-carbon steel which is then rolled at the plant’s rolling mill 450. The plant has designed a special grooving for rolling its conductor rails.

In accordance with the contract, a 50-tonne test batch of these rails is getting ready to be shipped to Mosinzhproekt, the company constructing Moscow metro tunnels and stations as well as other road infrastructure in the Russian capital.

“Mastering production of conductor rails will enable us to substitute imports of yet another key product for our country. This is why this project has a special significance for us,” Izhstal PAO’s Managing Director Sergey Kozennov commented.
